the story behind the image

It's taken me a while to recognise that I'm drawn to two very distinct groups of people at weddings (apart from the bride and groom). The first is children, especially toddlers who are always a delight to capture and never fail to entertain.

The second is grandparents. I knew from the pre-wedding consultation that Doreen is the bride's 'number one person'. I completely understand why grandparents are the true VIPs at a wedding. As a child, I spent a large part of the summer holidays with my nanny and poppa. Spending time with grandparents at a wedding brings back very fond memories.

The story behind this image is very simple. In the hustle and bustle of bridal preparations I happened to walk past Doreen's room. Fortunately, the door was wide open. Grandma was taking a moment to enjoy her glass of Prosecco before changing into her wedding outfit.

It's a real gift when you catch moments like this. Totally unposed and unprompted. I search for them at every wedding I shoot.

We can all appreciate why images of grandparents are so precious. Doreen was 95 years old when this photograph was taken. Whilst she was able to take part in the group shots it was wonderful to catch her sitting down, totally relaxed and comfortable.
